The Singapore Unbound Fellowship
The goal of the Singapore Unbound Fellowship is to cultivate literary talent and encourage literary achievement by immersing a promising Singaporean author in the cultural life of New York City. Home to trail-blazing writers and literary organizations, exciting theater, innovative art, and diverse communities, New York City offers a stimulating environment and powerful inspiration for creative writing.
The fellowship, worth USD5000, is awarded to an author who demonstrates great promise and who will benefit significantly from a stint in NYC. They may work in any creative genre and language, but must be a long-term resident of Singapore who plans to return there after the fellowship period.
Upon acceptance of the fellowship, the recipient resides in New York City for two continuous weeks, working on a writing project and experiencing the vibrant life of the city. They participate in one literary event organized by Singapore Unbound, which may take the form of a public reading, panel discussion, or school visit. The fellow is otherwise at liberty to decide on the best use of their time. No report at the end of the residency is required.
The fellowship covers airfare, accommodation, meals, and other expenses. The fellow makes their own travel and living arrangements. Half of the fellowship will be paid at the beginning of the residency and the other half at its successful completion.
The award is open to both self-nominations and nominations by the selection committee. Interested persons should submit a CV, a creative work of 10 pages, and a letter of 500 words explaining how the fellowship would benefit them. If the submission is not in the four official languages (Malay, Chinese, Tamil, and English), it must be accompanied by an English translation. These documents are to be sent in one PDF file to email@example.com. The deadline is May 1, 2017.
The selection committee comprises three individuals, who are either literary practitioners or close observers of Singapore’s literary development. The award will be announced in June 2017 and the award ceremony will be held in Singapore in July 2017. The recipient decides, in consultation with Singapore Unbound, on the period of their residency within a year of the award.
